November 1, 2007 PCOs Recommend Sharon Nelson for State Representative 34th District PCOs convened at the Hall at Fauntleroy on Thursday night, November 1st, and recommended Sharon Nelson for appointment to the position of State Representative (Position 2), which became vacant in October when former State Rep. Joe McDermott was appointed to the State Senate. Nelson has considerable experience working a wide range of issues in the 34th District, most notably environmental issues on Vashon and Maury Islands. Sharon presently serves as Chief of Staff to King County Councilmember Dow Constantine. She is married and has two grown daughters.

King County Democrats Chair Susan Sheary convened the special meeting of 134 precinct committee officers at 7:15 PM at the Hall at Fauntleroy in West Seattle (see official call here). The PCO's had responded to an official call to the meeting. Five candidates sought the appointment: Nelson, Kim Becklund, Greg Doss, Lucy Kraowiak and Toni Lysen. Each candidate had five minutes for remarks to the PCO's. Former State Senator Erik Poulsen introduced and strongly endorsed Sharon Nelson for the position, stating this was only the second time he had spoken for a candidate for such an appointment.
On the first ballot, the tally was:
Sharon Nelson - 77 votes
Toni Lysen - 39 votes
Greg Doss - 13 votes
Kim Becklund - 3 votes
Lucy Krakowiak - 2 votes
A second ballot was taken, with only the top three candidates. The results, with 129 PCO's voting, were:
Sharon Nelson - 78 votes
Toni Lysen - 39 votes
Greg Doss - 12 votes
These three names will be immediately forwarded to the King County Council, which may act as soon as Monday, Novemeber 5th, to appoint the State Representative.
