February District Meeting: Housing
The next meeting of the 34th District Democrats is Wednesday, February
8th.
Our main program topic is housing in our neighborhoods. We'll hear
from former 11th District State Representative Velma Veloria and
the Director of the Seattle Office of Housing Adrienne Quinn (pictured
at right) plus Elana Dix of SAGE. Also, our treasurer, Sarah Earl,
has resigned in order to concentrate on our outreach activities.
We'll be seeking nominations for and will elect a replacement. For
details, see the meeting agenda page and Chair Ivan Weiss' February
letter to the membership. The February newsletter is published and
mailed - you can also download it here.

Two Great Outreach Projects Help District Residents
We had two very successful Outreach projects on Saturday, February 26th. Volunteers from the 34th District included: Brian Earl, Sarah Earl, Tanya Aguilar, Tanya's Mom and Dad--Judy and Juan Aguilar, Liz Giba, Sue Mitchell, Susan Schumaker, Dina Johnson, Rebecca Soldana, Sandra Tussing, & Steve Karbowski. Adria Briehl, Volunteer Chore Services Coordinator, orchestrated the projects at both locations. We were able to help a middle-aged couple (husband disabled) with a school aged girl with yard work, raking, and disposal of three truck loads of yard waste. More information and photos on the Outreach Committee page.

February 20th Legislative Action Day and Crab Feed
The February 20th Legislative Action Day in Olympia was a success, with a number of 34th District members traveling and visiting with our legislators. Photo at right: State Senator Erik Poulsen and 34th District Chair Ivan Weiss. In the evening, there was a phenomenal gathering - the State Party Crab feed at St. Martin's college in Lacey. See the photo page of shots taken by Richard Bartlett and Dina Johnson.

Grannies have Plenty To Rage About
"A few years ago, I donned an outrageous hat and added lots of jewelry and became one of the Raging Grannies of Seattle. I linked my voice with the voices of many more grannies to sing out against war mongering and the rape of the environment. We even sang a mammogram song urging women to put up with the squishing of their mammary glands to get a look at their "dark side." Then we sang parodies of the usual holiday carols with messages about buying no more war toys and replacing greed with the true spirit of the season." Read the complete guest columnist opinion rendered by Georgie Bright Kunkel in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on Friday, February 24th. Also on the PI website.

Planning for Legislative Action Day, February 20th
The legislative action committee is sponsoring our
annual Presidents' Day trip to Olympia. To carpool, call Toni Lysen
244-6611 or Jackie Dupras 935-9683. We will arrange for carpools
so that those attending the crab feed will travel together, and
those who only want to attend the Olympia events will travel together.
This is a great way to meet your legislators in an informal setting
and find out how things work in Olympia. Here's the schedule:
7:45 Meet at Safeway on Roxbury near the gas station to carpool to Olympia
9:00 Gather in the Legislative Office Building
9:30 Meet with Rep. Joe McDermott
10:00 Meet on the steps of the Capitol
10:30 Meet with Sen. Erik Poulsen
11:00 Watch the House or Senate in Session
12:00 LAC Legislator Reception in the Columbia Room (main floor) of the State Legislature Building. Speaker Frank Chopp and all King County Legislators are invited to drop by and give us an update. Deli lunch will be provided with a vegetarian option for a suggested donation of $5.00. Please let Toni know if you are planning on buying lunch. If you prefer you can bring your own lunch, but don't depend on purchasing food in the cafeteria. The lines are incredibly long.
1:30 Attend a hearing (schedules will be available)
2:00 Special LAC tour of the Capitol
3:00 Tentative appointment with Rep. Eileen Cody
4:00 Head for home or stay for the Crab Feed at St. Marin's College - see details on the calendar page.
